China marks 100 days to Olympics

Added: 04/29/2008

With 100 days remaining until the Olympic Games gets underway, Chinese authorities are preparing to mark the milestone with a series of events.

Thorough preparations

The official torch will arrive in Hong Kong later, and security has been stepped up to ensure the event is peaceful.

Three pro-Tibet activists who had planned to protest during the Hong Kong leg of the relay were deported after they arrived at the territory's airport on Tuesday.

Days earlier, three Danish human rights activists also were detained and deported from Hong Kong.

While the Olympic flame's troubled circumnavigation of the globe has made headlines around the world, Beijing's successful preparation for the Games has received less attention.

Some Olympic stadiums and infrastructure have been completed ahead of schedule, and the city has spent nearly $40bn (£20bn) on improved infrastructure, including a new airport terminal and underground rail lines.
